Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, one the most vulnerable Democrats, could have another opponent.
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, West Virginia Governor, stated Tuesday that he was “very seriously considering running” for Senate. He joins several other politicians who are also looking into a run for the Republican nomination to Manchin’s place.
Justice stated Tuesday at a press conference that “I haven’t made a final determination yet, you know.” However, he promised you that no matter what I do, he would be your governor for the next two years.
“I won’t sit and watch the world go by. That is not what I believe. Justice stated, “I’ll be your governor.” “I believe that the people of West Virginia will support me in any decision I make. They’ll be right there with me as they know that I will be right with them.
Justice stated that he was seriously considering the possibility of running for Senate and is currently discussing it with his family and friends. He said, “You’ll be able to know real soon.”
Manchin was challenged by his 2024 first challenger one week after the 2022 midterm election. Democrats secured their slim Senate majority and may increase if Sen. Raphael Warnock wins the Georgia runoff election, Democrats also secured their wafer-thin Senate majority.
Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.) announced on Nov. 15 he would be running for the GOP nomination.
“West Virginia’s values are at risk in this nation. America is in a financial crisis. Mooney stated that he wanted to be part of the solution in America during a radio interview with MetroNews Talkline.
Patrick Morrisey from West Virginia is another potential opponent to Manchin. He wrote supporters last week saying that he was thinking about running for the U.S. Senate and West Virginia governor.
“I wanted to inform a lot of my supporters that I am going through a process. Morrisey stated that he is seriously considering a run for governor and the U.S. Senate. “We’re going to take the time, listen to people, and do this the right …. Our conservative achievements are the best of any candidate in West Virginia. I’m proud of that. “I just wanted to remind our supporters of this fact after the election.”
Manchin, a moderate Democratic member of Congress representing a state that President Trump won by 39 points in 2019, is one of the most liberal members of Congress. His margin of victory for his second term was only 3%. Next time, he may be challenged by the left.
For blocking portions of President Biden Build Back Better agenda, he has been criticized by the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, especially the “Squad”, of far-left House members. Manchin played a key role in the negotiation of the Inflation Reduction Act, a broad tax and climate policy bill that Biden signed this fall.
Manchin stated that even though he hasn’t yet announced his intention to run for re-election, any potential opponents to the Senate seat will not affect his decision whether or not he runs again.
Manchin stated, “I haven’t made a final decision as of yet.”
“But the bottom line, I have always insisted that whenever I make a decision it has never been based upon who’s running against or likely to run against me or on who declares they are against me. He said that he has never decided based on the opposition.
